This course offers an introduction to the dynamics of world women, gender and culture studies. It helps students in raising their awareness of gender equality, understanding cultural diversity and respecting cultural differences. It also equips students with the theory of cultural constructionism, enabling them to analyze existing gender ideology with critical eyes and preparing them to be a good observer and communicator.

This course provides a general knowledge of Chinese history, covering the historical transformations and continuities in China from ancient times to the present, with a special focus on:
(1) political, social, economic and cultural developments in different periods;
(2) characteristics, important historical events and figures; and
(3) the relationships between China and foreign states.
Students are also taught the basic theoretical tools to conduct historical research.
The course covers the periods from Song to Qing dynasties. It discusses a series of critical social and political transformations, including:
(1) The establishments of Liao, Jin, Mongol (Yuan), and Manchu Empires, and
(2) The rise of Neo-Confucianism, territorial and population expansions, and the decline of dynastic empires in China.
This course provides students with a systematic knowledge of the periods fraught with drastic political and social changes under the influences of peoples from Inner Asia and Manchuria.
International Relations (IR) is the study of relationships among nations. It can expand knowledge capacity in any of the many areas of concentration, facilitating a better understanding of the events that had or about to happen. Focusing on IR issues after World War II (WWII) between Southeast Asia nations with China; with the USA; and with other Pacific nations provide sufficient knowledge to understand fundamental IR theories and historically-proven methods to analyse the major issues surrounding these nations. Ultimately, it provides the necessary balance to stimulate students’ analytical- and critical thinking abilities, and to recognise the need to appreciate world affairs and worldviews to acquire knowledge on literature, culture, and arts, and not limiting to China alone.

This course strengthens the foundation of the Chinese language. It provides a systematic study that offers sufficient knowledge of the characteristics of the Chinese language, including its phonological system, lexicology and grammar, as well as the pragmatics system.
This course teaches how to communicate with the people in different cultural backgrounds. It aims at training students to understand the cultural difference and learning the basic theory of cross-cultural communication, which will be useful for their future study and work whether at home or abroad.
This course adds value to the critical learning of students. It equips students with fundamental knowledge and skills on teaching Chinese as a foreign language, including a basic guide on the teaching procedures and techniques, as well as the methodology of training. Combined with the knowledge gained from the entire programme, it is sufficient to equip students with basic skills an techniques to teach Chinese as a foreign language
