As additive manufacturing (AM) is one of the nine pillars in industry 4.0, it is necessary for engineering students to enhance and to develop in house simulation driven design and optimization capability in AM area. In this course, students will develop a rich knowledge of AM technologies, devices, capabilities, materials and applications. Students will also learn the trade-off between various AM processes and technologies, along with various software tools and technique. This course basically discusses momentum, heat and mass transfer and their critical roles in chemical or other processing industries. This course is aimed to deepen the students' knowledge on unit operations particularly related to liquid-liquid extraction, solid-liquid extraction, drying of solids, heat transfer, distillation and absorption processes.

Project Management is about leading a team of diverse functional specialists towards a defined goal or outcome for which the project exists to deliver. This is however, not as easy as it might sound. Projects must operate within defined parameters, they often reflect a step into the unknown, are subject to a multitude of stakeholder influences and agendas and the environment within which they operate is often rapidly changing. This course has been specifically designed to provide the delegate with both a comprehensive and a holistic perspective of project management– to build a solid foundation from which to develop the required core skills to be a successful project manager in energy related field. This course is an immersive experience with a significant emphasis on open dialogue and participant involvement in a variety of exercises and scenarios.

The course aims to enable a comprehensive understanding of biomass conversion technologies. It consists of 12 main components: introduction to processing of biomass into fuels, chemicals, and power; combustion; gasification; syngas cleanup, conditioning, and utilization; fermentation to bio-gas and bio-liquid; biomass compressing; biodiesel; fast pyrolysis; upgrading of fast pyrolysis products; hydrothermal processing; catalytic conversion of sugars to fuels; and costs of processing and conversion of biomass sources.

Sensors play a crucial role in making the system intellectual and less dependent on manpower. Different types of sensors are available as per the suitability and applications. In this subject, fibre-optic sensors will show significant advantages against other sensor technologies when installed in the right application, especially in energy-related field. In this course, covers innovative fibre optics sensing concepts for energy harvesting, monitoring, and efficient usage, from fundamental principles to applications.

This course focuses on the theory of economics as well as applying them to the practical policy-making process, it consists of an introduction of energy economics and analysis of energy policies. Generally, this course will be focused on the following aspects: energy economics, energy and development, energy demand and supply situation, energy conservation, carbon emission reduction, etc. This course emphasizes building up students’ ability to understand and apply the basic knowledge and techniques into analyzing energy policies, such as electricity market reform, renewable energy policies, climate change policies and etc. By the end of the semester, students are expected to display a confident knowledge of the main geopolitical factors that shaped the international world of energy and should be able to use their critical skills to analyze the main current and future issues.

Topics covered include the following: Basic concepts of direct current (DC) and alternating current (AC) circuits, nodal and mesh analysis, circuit theorems, maximum power transfer theorem, operational amplifier (op-amp), capacitors, inductors, resistive-inductor-capacitor (RLC) circuits, AC phasor analysis and AC power analysis. The students will learn, analyze and explore the operating mechanisms of AC and DC circuits by using mathematical analysis.
