2021 - 2022

The course introduces students to English novels written in 18th and 19th centuries. They will critically examine the constituent elements of the novels, including the social, cultural, historical and religious contexts, as well as the characters, plot and setting. They will learn to write critically papers in response to the novels, and respond to the critical essays on the novels written by others. They will read a few novels representative of the periods, but will read one British and one American novels in more depth.

This course presents a broad outline of the development of British and American literature. It offers a chronological and critical survey of British literature from Anglo-Saxon period, the Middle Ages, Renaissance to modern period. It offers a chronological and critical survey of American literature from colonial period to modern times. It examines the different movements and genres developed during these periods and places them in their social-cultural contexts. Students will have opportunity to know about some influential works of prose, poetry, drama and fiction in relation to their historical, social, political and cultural contexts.

This course aims to help students to read more effectively by presenting and developing the various skills needed for successful reading comprehension. The content of this course is designed for advanced learners of English, including all examples of contemporary of British and American English taken from a variety of sources such as newspapers, magazines, novels, advertising materials and instructions. The students will be instructed how to extract main ideas, how to read for specific information, how to understand text organization, how to predict, how to infer, how to deal with unfamiliar words, how to link ideas, how to understand complex sentences, how to evaluate the text and how to draw a conclusion.

The English placement test measures students’ ability to use and understand English at the university level. The speaking section assesses the students’ proficiency in spoken English while the writing tasks test their ability to write a summary, and to respond to a topic and produce a coherent and convincing argument.
