These models will be particularly useful in analysing financial data, and constructing and evaluating the performance of different trading strategies.

Thesis work demonstrates the mastery of relevant knowledge and research skills of students. The degree of knowledge and skills acquired throughout the programme, including skills in writing as well as critical and analytical thinking, can be exhibited in a substantial research paper that meets academic standards. It can also enculturate interest in independent and lifelong learning. The topic of the thesis will be discussed between the student and supervisor, where the topics differ between students. The thesis is expected to be between 7,000 and 10,000 words.

This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the data and its relevance in business and develop an understanding of the quantitative techniques from statistics. A particular emphasis is placed on developing the ability to interpret the numerical information that forms the basis of decision-making in business. Most of the examples are drawn from a variety of business applications. This course introduces business statistics and fundamental aspects of decision-making. It examines aspects of business and marketing with regards to basic statistical analysis. Students will be provided with the theoretical concepts, tools and methods of statistics as well as the opportunity to work through example problems.

This course introduces students to basic concepts and methods in calculus. Topics covered include: functions, limits, derivatives, chain rule, rates of change, maxima and minima, integration, integration by substitution, partial derivatives, classification of stationary points, differential equations, and separable equations.

The course contents could be divided into five parts: introduction to financial system, time money value, pricing model, risk management and portfolio management, and no-arbitrage pricing. They are expected to provide students with basic ideas about how the financial system works, basic skills in financial practice, and a solid foundation for further study in this field.

Note: Students' self-enrollment key is not required for this course of SEM202 Principles of Finance. The students who have registered the course successfully with Office of Academic Affairs will be manually enrolled by tutors into Moodle with course name "SEM202 Principles of Finance 2025/09 Khar Mang Tan" starting 28/09/2025 (Sunday of Week 0) 5pm.
