This course provides a closer study on the most prosperous dynasty of Chinese history: Tang dynasty. It includes the topics on the development and transition of pre-Tang period, early Tang period, flourishing mid-Tang period, late Tang period, and some famous characters in Tang dynasty, the political system, economic system and
military system, etc. And some topics on the daily life in Tang dynasty. Students are also taught the basic theoretical methods to conduct historical research.

《汉字学》这门课程主要讲授汉字的性质、汉字的起源、形成和发展、汉字形体的演变、汉字的基本类型、汉字的整理和简化等内容。课程旨在使学生全面了解中国文字的发展演变、构造理论,并对其有更深入的认识。

This course aims to enhance students' Chinese academic writing skills, with a focus on structure, coherence, and argumentation. It offers comprehensive instruction on writing research papers, essays, and reports while maintaining academic standards. Students will learn to develop clear and logical arguments, use appropriate language, and cite sources correctly. The course covers key elements of the writing process, including topic selection, literature review, research methods, argumentation, and revision. Through practical exercises and feedback, students will refine their writing style and improve clarity and precision. The course also emphasizes the avoidance of common pitfalls in academic writing, such as redundancy, vague expressions, and improper citations.
This course offers an introduction to Chinese thought, and explores the characteristics and historical changes of Chinese culture. The first part of this course explores fundamental concepts of Chinese thought within the rich tapestry of its historical and cultural context, while also employing cross-cultural comparisons. The second part of this course covers various aspects of Chinese culture, such as ancient myths, Buddhist and Daoist cultures, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the cultural forces that have shaped one of the world's oldest civilizations.
Thesis work commences in the second semester of the third year. The student is to prepare an extended paper that presents a substantial thesis and defends it. The topic of the thesis will be discussed between the student and supervisor, where the topics differ between students. An oral examination will also be conducted when the written thesis has been assessed completed.

This course is Advanced Chinese: Enriching Vocabulary, Phonetics and Grammar, with the course code CHS1310. This is a comprehensive training course in the Chinese language covering areas in verbal, aural, reading, and writing. The vocabulary training will extend to advanced social interaction, politics, economics, and culture, supported by fine-tuning pronunciation, intonation, and correcting errors caused by the native tongue during phonetics training. The course is supplemented with grammar training, which involves studying functional words, comparing different sentential constructions, and more.

This course is Introduction to Applied Linguistics with the course code CHS3320. The course covers the definition, properties, and principles of applied linguistics, paving the way for students to recognise the scope and nature of its application in everyday situations. It studies the latest developments through the examination of new words and new expressions, advertising language, and network language; practicalities of teaching Chinese as a second language; and language communication in various circumstances.
