This course is Introduction to Sociolinguistics with the course code CHS1360. This course will introduce some key concepts in sociolinguistics, covering various topics such as multilingual speech communities and language variation focusing on language users and uses respectively. The students may enhance their understanding of languages in society through carrying out their research projects.

This course integrates close readings of selected works with instruction on the fundamental forms and prosodic rules of classical Chinese poetry. Combining theory with practice, it aims to cultivate students’ skills in composing classical verse. Through guided creation and appreciation, students will learn to express themselves in traditional poetic forms and gain a deeper understanding of the aesthetic dimensions of classical Chinese poetry.

This course provides an analytical and general study of overseas Chinese worldwide, including in Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, North America and Europe. It gives an insight of the impacts and issues surrounding them, their lives, the internal divisions in their communities, as well as their relationship within or outside their host country, including China, either in the economic or political perspectives.
This course is Advanced Chinese Upskilling Rhetoric, Reading and Writing, with the course code CHS1311. This course provides students with a comprehensive training of the Chinese language covering areas in verbal, aural, reading, and writing. It requires studying selected Chinese literature, and analysing the different rhetorical skills and common errors in rhetoric. The examination of the different Chinese rhetorical skills, such as metaphor, exaggeration, Dui-ou, parallelism, and nonce word, will be conducted to sharpen skills in rhetoric, reading, and writing.

This course covers the history starting from the Spring and Autumn period, covering Warring States, Qin, Han, Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui, Tang,
right up to the Five Dynasties. It focuses on political institutions, territorial expansions and contractions, economic conditions, social changes, religious developments,
and cultural transformations and pluralism during those period.
This course provides a general knowledge of Chinese history, covering the historical transformations and continuities in China from ancient times to the present, with a
special focus on (1) political, social, economic and cultural developments in different periods; (2) characteristics, important historical events and figures; and (3) the
relationships between China and foreign states. Students are also taught the basic theoretical tools to conduct historical research.
This course provides an in-depth study of representative Taiwanese novels, with attention to genre, narrative style, and literary context. Emphasis is placed on close reading (textual autonomy), encouraging detailed textual analysis—focusing on language, structure, and literary devices—while minimizing consideration of external factors such as authorial intent or historical context, to enhance students' skills in narrative analysis and literary interpretation.
This course focuses on exploring representative works of Hong Kong fiction in the 20th century, understanding their evolution, analyzing their genres, languages and styles, It introduces students to a systematic approach inspired by anatomy criticism, emphasizing recurring literary structures to understand the literary characteristics derived from cultural differences, and appreciating their multiple narratives and hybrid language rhetorical expressions.

This course combines history and literature. It enables students to develop skills in reading classical Chinese historical texts and to analyze the narrative strategies in historical writings, as well as their literary adaptation and influence, through both historical and literary perspectives. By learning key historiographical theories, students will examine the relationship between factual recording and literary expression.
